How a ball screw works?

The task of ball screws is to convert rotary motion into longitudinal motion. The mechanism consists of a screw and a nut. The nut contains balls that roll in the grooves between the screw and the nut. Because the balls roll and do not slip, friction resistance is much lower.

Therefore, we obtain smooth and precise movement. The balls roll in a closed circuit in the direction in which the linear movement is performed.

Due to their features:

  • – smoothness of movement
  • – low friction
  • – high durability
  • – high load capacity
  • – precision

ball screws are widely used in machine tools as drive elements.

Ball screws in DTI machine tools

The above features mean that we often use ball screws in our machines. However, because we produce heavy-duty machine tools adapted to machining with an ISO 60 taper, we reach for appropriately large screws. The largest of them are 13 meters long and have a diameter of 120 mm.
