Perfection in modernization
15 years ago, a customer from the railway industry asked us to upgrade an old Waldrich Coburg planer into a modern CNC milling machine.
The machine was to be used for machining Hadfield steel (production of railway crossings and switches).
We used only the basic bodies (bed and table) from the old machine. We equipped the machine with two new vertical milling units with a spindle power of 71 kW (S1), maximum torque of 5400 Nm and ISO 60 tool taper each. For the slider movement we used a double "gantry" feed drive to ensure high accuracy of slider positioning.
The old drive of the table was carried out by a hydraulic cylinder. During the modernization we replaced it with ø120mm diameter ball screw, planetary gearbox and a SIEMENS servo drive to guarantee high table positioning accuracy.
We replaced the old frame by a new one, consisting of two columns and a fixed cross rail made of gray cast iron GG25.
We installed two widely spaced, precisely hardened and ground sliding guideways on the front surface of the cross rail and one roller guideway on the rear side.
After 15 years of an uninterrupted operation of the milling machine, the customer reported the need to overhaul the machine. Among others, the following elements were replaced:
